January has always been a time when I try to reset after the hectic end-of-year rush. I’m not talking about fancy diet fads or the latest gym craze, I mean truly resetting yourself. Taking the time to get to know who you currently are and to find your guiding voice. Seek your inner truth so it can guide you through your best year ever!
One of the best ways I’ve discovered to ground myself is to start, or restart, a set of daily rituals. Habits are great and all but having a set of meaningful acts that you perform for yourself each day can serve not only as a comforting reminder of normalcy but also as a confirmation that you are valuable, that your choices are meaningful, and that you deserve the things you’re striving for.
If you lead a fairly hectic life, as I do, keeping it simple does the trick. I start and end each day with 3 small acts.
1. Solo Cuppa
I’m usually up by 6. (Someday science will discover just how it is that teenagers can sleep through every alarm device known to man). This gives me time to enjoy a freshly brewed cup of coffee, or tea (which gets a splash of Fire Cider, of course!), and a snuggle with my cat before the rest of the household wakes up. No technology, no distractions, just a few minutes of breathing and thinking about the day to come.
2. Tiny Tidy-up
I clean one small area of my house each morning: whether it’s the kitchen counter, the corner of the dining room where all the junk mail and daily detritus pile-up, or a quick vacuum of the living room. A single small thing each day makes a huge impact on keeping up with the house.
3. DIY Meal Kit!
I’m tired and frazzled by the time I get home at the end of the day and I’m not cognitively functional enough to imagine a meal but I can easily put together something already laid out. I mimic what those fancy meal kit services provide, gathering the ingredients I already have into a single place in the fridge (hello big mixing bowls!) where they are easy to grab. I find that this bit of forethought in the mornings makes my evenings flow so much easier!
1. Say Hello!
Send 1 email or message to someone I’m thinking of. Sometimes it’s a text to my Mom or nephew, sometimes an email to an old friend or an Instagram DM to an account I admire. One extra bit of human interaction helps to keep me connected and it can really make someone else’s day!
2. Jot It Down
The last moments of the evening are usually when I have found most of my creative inspiration, and I fought it for years. I would let myself get swept up in the starting of whatever idea had hit me or I'd toss and turn in bed thinking about the thing I was too tired to do. Now I let the ideas come, I jot them down and I DO something with them later, when I have the time and energy to do so.
3. Spa Time
5-minute nano-spa before bed. Seriously, don’t underestimate the relaxing benefits of a steaming hot facecloth! Brush, floss, enjoy steamy washcloth on my face while I moisturize my winter-dry hands - take a few minutes to breathe here and disconnect from the world - then a quick bit of moisturizer for my face and lips and I’m ready for bed.
