We don't know about where you are, but here in Massachusetts, we've had lots of sunshine and the perfect amount of well-timed rain the last couple of weeks, and that makes us excited for gardening season! And what better time to plan out your garden (or start planting it, if you're feeling spontaneous!) than World Plant a Vegetable Garden Day!
A vegetable garden not only gives you a great summer hobby and an Instagram-worthy spot in your yard, but it also provides you with the absolute freshest produce you can ask for. While you'll probably want to stick to the supermarket for staples like apples and citrus fruits, you can still grow lots of summer must-haves right in your own backyard.
After researching what grows best in your area and the best time to plant, it's time to decide what you're going to grow! We always like to start with our family's favorites. For me, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, green beans, and zucchini are non-negotiables. From there, we add in things we'd like to have, like carrots, radishes, and maybe even a few watermelon or pumpkin seeds. If they don't succeed, at least we tried!
Depending on your climate, your soil, how often your garden gets watered, and what you're planting, you could have fresh, home-grown produce in just a couple of months! Just be sure to check in on it often, make sure the garden gets watered often, and keep little critters out with some fencing.
